Part Two of the “How to Test a Prophetic Word” Series

In Part One, I gave you five simple ways I test a prophetic word as a Prophet of Grace. We talked about Jesus being our lens, understanding the covenant we’re standing in, reconciliation, separating revelation from interpretation, and looking at the fruit a word produces.

But once you start testing prophecy, some harder questions come up.

And they should.

Testing prophecy isn’t dishonoring prophecy. First Thessalonians 5:20–21 actually tells us not to despise prophecy, but to test everything and hold fast to what is good.

So let’s deal with 12 questions people don’t always want to talk about.

1. IF A PROPHECY IS 100% ACCURATE, HOW COULD IT NOT BE GOD?

Because accuracy proves information was known. It doesn’t automatically prove the source.

In Acts 16:16–18, a girl operating through a spirit of divination followed Paul and declared that he and his companions were servants of the Most High God showing people the way of salvation.

Here’s what’s interesting: what she said was true.

Paul still discerned the spirit behind it.

That’s why 1 John 4:1 tells us to “try the spirits.”

I believe in supernatural accuracy. I operate in words of knowledge myself. But don’t become so impressed by information that you turn your discernment off.

2. CAN A NEW COVENANT PROPHET GIVE A STRONG WARNING?

Absolutely.

Grace doesn’t remove correction.

The Holy Spirit can say, “Stop. Don’t go down that road.”

But correction isn’t rejection.

Hebrews 12:6 connects the Father’s discipline to His love. A prophetic warning should ultimately serve restoration, protection, freedom, and life.

Sometimes grace sounds like, “I love you.”

Sometimes grace sounds like, “Don’t touch that.”

3. DIDN’T JESUS SPEAK ABOUT JUDGMENT?

Yes, and this is important.

When I say, “Does it look like Jesus?” I’m not saying, “Does it always sound nice?”

Jesus confronted hypocrisy. He overturned tables. He gave serious warnings.

But this same Jesus touched lepers, ate with sinners, restored failures, and forgave His enemies.

John 3:17 says God didn’t send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it.

Jesus can confront darkness without becoming darkness.

4. WHO DECIDES WHAT “LOOKS LIKE JESUS”?

We don’t get to create our own version of Jesus.

Look at Jesus revealed in Scripture.

Watch how He treats sinners. Watch how He confronts religious systems. Watch Him with the woman caught in adultery. Watch Him with Zacchaeus. Watch Him restore Peter.

Then look at the cross.

Jesus said, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:9).

Jesus isn’t whoever PAULYB wants Him to be.

Jesus Himself is our clearest revelation of the Father’s heart.

5. WHAT IF TWO PROPHETS GIVE ME OPPOSITE WORDS?

Don’t panic.

First Corinthians 14:29 says:

“Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.”

Prophecy was designed to be weighed.

Sometimes people see different pieces. Sometimes revelation is interpreted incorrectly.

And sometimes somebody simply misses it.

Write the words down. Pray. Test them. Look for confirmation. Don’t force either one because somebody put “Prophet” in front of their name.

God isn’t nervous because you’re taking time to discern.

6. WHAT IF THE PROPHET IS WELL-KNOWN AND USUALLY ACCURATE?

Honor their gift without surrendering your discernment.

I don’t care how many followers somebody has, how many conferences they preach, or how many accurate prophecies they’ve given.

That includes me.

If PAULYB gives you a prophetic word, test it.

A healthy prophet shouldn’t need you dependent upon them.

My job isn’t to replace the Holy Spirit in your life. My job should help you recognize Him.

7. WHAT IF THE WORD DOESN’T MAKE SENSE YET?

Don’t manufacture meaning.

Luke 2:19 says Mary kept certain things and pondered them in her heart.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you need to do.

Write the word down. Date it. Pray over it.

But don’t start manipulating circumstances trying to make the prophecy happen.

Time can be a great prophetic filter.

8. WHAT IF THE PROPHECY TELLS ME EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR?

Be careful.

Not because it’s automatically wrong, but because desire can affect discernment.

If you’ve wanted somebody to be your spouse for three years and somebody prophesies, “That’s your husband,” you’re probably going to get excited.

But excitement isn’t necessarily confirmation.

Ask yourself:

“Would I still believe this was God if it wasn’t what I wanted to hear?”

Don’t use prophecy as God’s permission slip for something you’ve already decided.

9. CAN FEAR AFFECT HOW I TEST PROPHECY?

Absolutely.

It’s not only desire that can distort discernment. Fear can too.

If you’ve always believed God is angry and waiting to punish you, a terrifying prophetic word may immediately “feel like God” because it agrees with the picture of God you already carry.

That’s why “it bears witness” can’t simply mean you had a strong emotional reaction.

Emotion is real.

But emotion isn’t always discernment.

10. WHAT IF PART OF THE PROPHECY IS RIGHT AND PART IS WRONG?

This happens.

First Thessalonians 5:21 says:

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

Notice Paul doesn’t say hold fast to everything.

Someone may genuinely receive something and then add their own interpretation.

You don’t have to swallow the entire word because one part was accurate.

And you don’t necessarily have to throw everything away because one part was wrong.

Test it.

Keep what is good.

That’s maturity.

11. WHAT IF THE PROPHECY DOESN’T COME TRUE?

This is where prophets need humility.

Sometimes timing was misunderstood. Sometimes interpretation was wrong. Sometimes somebody turned a possibility into an absolute prediction.

And sometimes the prophet simply missed it.

We need to be able to say that.

If I clearly miss something, maturity doesn’t require me to defend myself.

It requires me to say:

“I missed that. I’m sorry.”

We also have to stop automatically blaming the person who received the word.

“You didn’t have enough faith.”

“You didn’t activate the word.”

“You didn’t sow enough money.”

Be careful with that.

Sometimes the prophet got it wrong.

Prophetic accountability matters.

12. WHAT IF A PROPHETIC WORD MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE?

Don’t reject it simply because it bothers you.

Truth can be uncomfortable.

Correction can hurt.

The Holy Spirit can put His finger directly on something you’ve been avoiding.

But there’s a difference between conviction and condemnation.

Condemnation says:

“You’re rejected because of what you’ve done.”

Grace-filled correction says:

“This isn’t who you are. Why are you living beneath what is true about you?”

One attacks identity.

The other calls you back to it.

That’s the difference.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO TEST PROPHECY

I want to leave you with something simple.

Testing a prophetic word isn’t dishonoring the prophet.

It’s biblical.

First Thessalonians 5:20–21 says:

“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

That’s the balance.

Don’t despise prophecy.

But don’t blindly swallow everything either.

You can honor a prophet and still ask questions.

You can receive a word and wait.

You can say, “This part bears witness, but I’m not sure about that part.”

You can seek confirmation.

You can involve mature believers.

And prophets, we need enough humility to allow people to do this.

If somebody testing my prophetic word threatens me, I’ve made the prophetic gift too much about me.

I’m a Prophet of Grace, but I’m still not Jesus.

I can receive something correctly and interpret it incorrectly.

I can miss something.

So can you.

That’s why we need Jesus, Scripture, the Holy Spirit, mature community, humility, and discernment working together.

Don’t become so impressed because somebody knew your name, address, birthday, future spouse, or something about your past that you hand them control of your life.

Honor prophecy.

Desire prophecy.

Receive prophecy.

Test prophecy.

And after you’ve tested it, do exactly what Paul told us to do:

Hold fast to what is good.
