For example, fear is real as an experience. A person may genuinely feel abandoned, rejected, separated from God, or surrounded by darkness. We should never tell them, “That isn’t real.” Their experience is real. But the meaning they have assigned to the experience may not be objectively true.

That is where discernment begins.

OBJECTIVE TRUTH vs. SUBJECTIVE REALITY

Training the Seer to Discern Beyond What Is Felt, Seen, or Experienced

I want to teach you a deep principle of discernment that will help you become more accurate in hearing and seeing spiritually.

There are two things we have to learn to distinguish:

Objective truth and subjective reality.

Objective truth is what is true regardless of what I currently feel, see, think, or experience.

Subjective reality is what I am personally experiencing, perceiving, feeling, or interpreting at the moment.

Both matter.

But they do not carry the same authority.

1. YOUR EXPERIENCE CAN BE REAL WITHOUT BEING THE HIGHEST TRUTH

This is where many people get confused.

If someone tells me, “I feel completely alone,” I do not need to argue with them.

They really feel alone.

That experience is real.

But their experience does not automatically establish an objective truth that they are alone.

Those are two different statements.

“I feel alone” describes their experience.

“I am alone” makes a statement about reality itself.

That distinction is incredibly important for prophetic ministry.

God’s objective truth becomes the reference point by which we learn to interpret our subjective experience.

2. TRUTH NEEDS A REFERENCE POINT

If truth has no reference point, then everything becomes whatever I personally perceive it to be.

For us, that reference point is ultimately revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
— John 14:6

Truth is not simply an idea we are trying to discover.

Truth has been revealed in a Person.

So when I am discerning something spiritually, I have to ask:

Does what I am seeing agree with what God has revealed about Himself in Jesus?

That becomes my reference point.

3. GOD IS LIGHT

First John 1:5 says:

“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

Notice that John does not merely say God has light.

He says God is light.

This is an objective statement about the nature of God.

There is no darkness hiding somewhere inside the Father.

There is no darkness hiding somewhere inside Jesus.

God does not suddenly become darkness because I am experiencing darkness.

My perception does not change His nature.

This becomes very important when training a seer.

You may walk into someone’s life and immediately perceive fear, shame, confusion, pain, rejection, anger, or darkness.

Those things may genuinely be present in their experience.

But the immature seer stops there.

The mature seer asks:

“Father, what are You seeing inside this situation?”

That question changes prophetic ministry.

4. THE SEER MUST LEARN TO SEE LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

John 1:5 says:

“And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

There can be darkness in someone’s experience while the Light is still present.

The darkness does not prove the absence of the Light.

Sometimes it proves the person’s inability to presently perceive the Light.

That is an entirely different diagnosis.

Imagine someone standing in a dark room saying:

“There is no light.”

But there is a light shining behind them.

Their statement accurately describes what they currently perceive.

It does not accurately describe everything that is present.

This is where prophetic sight becomes powerful.

The prophet does not merely repeat what everybody else can see.

The prophet learns to perceive what God is revealing inside of what everybody else sees.

5. BLINDNESS DOES NOT REMOVE REALITY

Think about a physically blind person standing outside on a bright sunny day.

The sun is shining.

Their blindness is real.

Their experience of darkness is real.

But the sun is also objectively present.

This gives us a powerful picture of spiritual discernment.

Sometimes a person says:

“I cannot see God anywhere in this.”

Do not dismiss their experience.

Instead understand:

Their inability to perceive God does not prove God’s absence.

The prophetic gift can help them see what pain, fear, disappointment, trauma, shame, or unbelief has made difficult for them to perceive.

6. THIS CHANGES THE WAY WE PROPHESY

An immature prophetic person may simply describe someone’s darkness.

“I see rejection.”

“I see fear.”

“I see disappointment.”

“I see warfare.”

“I see confusion.”

That may be accurate observation.

But prophetic ministry should not end with the darkness.

Ask another question:

“Father, what is Your truth inside what I am seeing?”

Now you may begin to see something completely different.

You see fear.

God shows you courage being awakened.

You see rejection.

God shows you belonging.

You see someone who feels abandoned.

God shows you His presence surrounding them.

You see someone who believes their life is falling apart.

God shows you a transition they cannot yet recognize.

This is where the seer moves from simply detecting a condition to revealing God’s perspective within the condition.

7. DON’T INVALIDATE PEOPLE’S SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE

This is extremely important.

Never use objective truth as a weapon against someone’s pain.

If someone says:

“I am hurting.”

Do not answer:

“Well, you’re seated with Christ, so you’re not really hurting.”

No.

They are hurting.

That is their present experience.

Jesus never taught us to become emotionally dishonest.

Prophetic maturity allows us to hold two things at the same time:

“I recognize what you are experiencing.”

AND

“I can also see something God wants you to know that your present experience is making difficult for you to perceive.”

That is compassion and discernment working together.

8. THE EXPERIENCE IS REAL; THE INTERPRETATION MAY BE WRONG

This may be the most important sentence in the lesson:

The experience may be completely real while the interpretation of the experience is completely wrong.

A person experiences silence.

Their interpretation:

“God left me.”

The silence may be real.

The interpretation may be false.

A person experiences a closed door.

Their interpretation:

“God rejected me.”

The closed door is real.

The interpretation may be wrong.

A person experiences fear.

Their interpretation:

“Something terrible is about to happen.”

The fear is real.

The prophecy they created from their fear may not be.

This is why prophetic people have to learn the difference between:

What I am experiencing

What I am interpreting

and

What God is revealing.

Those are not automatically the same thing.

9. THIS IS HOW YOU TRAIN YOUR DISCERNMENT

When you perceive something, do not immediately call it revelation.

Slow down internally and ask:

What am I actually perceiving?

Then:

Is this something the person is experiencing, something I am experiencing, or something God is revealing?

Then:

What interpretation am I giving it?

And finally:

Jesus, show me Your perspective.

This creates prophetic maturity.

You stop assuming that every feeling is God’s voice.

You stop assuming that every picture is God’s interpretation.

You stop assuming that every atmosphere tells you the whole story.

You learn to discern.

10. A SEER DOES NOT JUST SEE WHAT IS THERE

This is the deeper lesson I want you to understand.

A seer is not merely someone who sees spiritual activity.

A seer learns to see from God’s reference point.

Anybody can walk into a broken situation and recognize brokenness.

Prophetic sight asks:

“Father, what do You see?”

That is why Jesus is our model.

Jesus said:

“The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do.”
— John 5:19

Jesus lived from the Father’s perspective.

That is where I want you to learn to live.

They already know what they are experiencing.

Learn to perceive the objective truth of Christ that their present experience may have prevented them from seeing.

THE DISCERNMENT FORMULA

Remember this:

Experience → Perception → Interpretation → Truth

Something happens.

I experience it.

I perceive something about it.

I interpret what I perceive.

But then I bring my interpretation back to the reference point of Christ.

That final step is discernment.

So when you are ministering prophetically, ask:

What is the person experiencing?

What are they believing their experience means?

What am I perceiving spiritually?

What interpretation am I putting on what I perceive?

What does Jesus reveal about the truth of this situation?

That is how we learn to see beyond darkness without pretending darkness is not being experienced.

We do not deny someone’s experience.

We reveal a greater reference point from which their experience can finally be understood.

That is prophetic discernment.
