You Are the Wave, but Your Identity Is the Ocean: Jesus and Our Union With God

INTRODUCTION: THE OCEAN REVELATION

One of the most powerful ways I can describe who we are in God is this:
God is the Ocean, and we are the waves.

A wave is not “less water” than the ocean. Its very nature — its DNA — is the ocean’s DNA. The wave may not be the whole ocean, but it is never separate from the ocean. Its identity is entirely found in the ocean’s existence.

This is who we are in God. We are the waves of His divine life, expressions of His essence, born from His Spirit. When people see us, they are meant to see the movement of God, just as when people saw Jesus, they saw the Father.

1. GOD IS THE OCEAN

When we speak of God, we are speaking of the infinite, eternal Source — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — who is life itself.

Acts 17:28 says, “For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
We don’t exist apart from God like an object set outside of its Maker. We live in Him. Our very being is sustained by His essence.

Colossians 1:16–17 reinforces this:
“All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Just as the ocean holds every wave together, God’s life holds every breath and heartbeat of creation.

2. WE ARE THE WAVES

If God is the Ocean, we are His waves — expressions of His movement, His rhythm, and His life.
• A wave is not the entire ocean (it is not the Source), but it is the ocean in essence.
• The wave’s shape is unique — but its identity is 100% found in the ocean.

This means:
• Your life is God’s life expressed through you.
• Your DNA is divine DNA — you are made in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26–27).
• You are not separate from Him. A wave cannot exist apart from the ocean, and you cannot exist apart from the Father’s breath (Genesis 2:7).

3. JESUS IS THE PERFECT WAVE — AND THE FULL OCEAN

When Jesus walked the earth, He said something shocking:
“Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).

Jesus was the eternal Ocean (God) who took the form of a wave (humanity) — yet He never lost His divinity. Even while fully human, He was still fully God.

Philippians 2:6-7 says:
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Jesus is the blueprint of what it means to be a wave fully alive with the Ocean’s life.
• He came to show us what humanity looks like when filled with God’s essence.
• He didn’t just come to forgive you; He came to place you in Him, just as a wave belongs to the ocean.

4. OUR IDENTITY IS IN THE OCEAN

Even though we are not the entire ocean, our identity is never separate from it.
• A wave doesn’t say, “I’m just a lonely bit of water trying to become part of the ocean.”
• The wave knows, “I already am the ocean in motion.” Even though I am distinct, you can’t separate me from the ocean because I’m found by the ocean.!

The same is true of you:
• Your identity is found in God’s essence, not apart from Him.
• You are one spirit with the Lord (1 Corinthians 6:17).
• Your life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3).

5. JESUS REVEALS OUR UNION

Jesus shows us that being human doesn’t mean being separate from God.
• John 10:30: “I and the Father are one.”
• John 17:22-23: “The glory You have given Me I have given them, that they may be one as We are one — I in them and You in Me — so that they may be brought to complete unity.”

Just as Jesus was not “less God” when He became human, you are not “less divine” by participation when you live filled with His Spirit.
You’re not God by nature (the Source), but you carry His life, His DNA, His glory.

6. WHEN PEOPLE SEE THE WAVE, THEY SHOULD SEE THE OCEAN

Jesus told His disciples, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father” (John 14:9).
Now, through His Spirit, we are meant to reflect the same reality.

• 2 Corinthians 3:18: “And we all… are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
• 1 John 4:17: “As He is, so are we in this world.”

This doesn’t mean we become the Ocean itself. It means we are so filled with His essence that when people see us, they encounter the movement, love, and nature of God.

7. OUR DISTINCTION IS FOUND IN JESUS

Our uniqueness, or “distinction,” is not lost in union with God — it’s revealed and fulfilled in Jesus.
• We are the One New Man (Ephesians 2:15), made whole in Him.
• Just as a wave doesn’t lose its shape by being ocean water, you don’t lose your individuality — you find your truest self in Him.

8. LIVING AS THE WAVE THAT REVEALS THE OCEAN

So how do we live this out?
• Recognize that you are already in union with God’s life. Stop striving for connection you already have.
• Renew your mind daily to think like a son/daughter, not like a spiritual orphan (Romans 8:15-16).
• Reflect God’s life by loving, forgiving, and moving in His power — just as Jesus did.
• Declare: “I am a wave of the Ocean’s life. When people see me, they will see God’s movement, love, and glory.”

9. PROPHETIC DECLARATION

I hear the Lord saying:
“You are not apart from Me. You are an expression of My life and glory. You are the wave of My Ocean — unique in form, but one in essence with My Spirit. As Jesus revealed Me, so will you. My DNA flows through your spirit, your soul, and even your body. Live as one who knows the Ocean is within you and around you.”

10. ACTIVATION
• Take 5 minutes today to visualize yourself as a wave on the Ocean of God’s love. Feel His life moving through you.
• Declare aloud:
“Father, I thank You that I am one with You through Jesus. Your essence is my existence. Just as the wave reveals the ocean, my life reveals You.”

CONCLUSION: THE OCEAN IS IN YOU

You may not be the whole Ocean, but the Ocean defines you.
• Your identity is not separate.
• Your distinction is found in Christ.
• When people see you, they should encounter God’s life in motion.

This is not a poetic idea — this is the reality Jesus died and rose to bring you into.
